Special Tribute
I am deeply honored and humbled to share a significant milestone in my journey of advocacy and service. On June 26th, 2026, I was presented with an official Special Tribute from the State of Michigan, signed and dedicated by State Senator Jim Runestad of the Twenty Third Senate District.
While this recognition stands as a profound personal milestone, it is, above all, a powerful testament to the resilience of survivors and the urgent necessity of the mission we fight for every day.
Turning Adversity into Systemic Reform
My advocacy did not begin in a legislative office; it was forged through lived experience. I am a survivor of extreme adversities, both as a child and as a woman, and the profound failures of the very institutions and systems that were supposed to protect me. For years, I experienced firsthand how the safety nets of our society can collapse, leaving the most vulnerable to slip through the cracks.
For a long time, the system was a source of trauma. Today, through this tribute, the state has formally acknowledged the vital work being done to fix what is broken. It is living proof that you can be failed by family, community and the system – survive it and return to change it.
The Mission of Expose and Reform Now (EARN)
The trauma of my past became the exact blueprint for Expose and Reform Now (EARN). I founded this organization so that no one else would have to navigate that darkness alone, transforming personal adversity into a powerful mission to protect, educate, and advocate.
Under our leadership, EARN has successfully helped more than 100 trafficking survivors access life-changing assistance. This tribute directly reflects our tireless, collective efforts to:
- Connect and Rescue: Providing victims with the critical resources, legal advocacy, protective orders, and family reunification tools they need to escape dangerous situations and safely rebuild their lives.
- Expose the Cracks: Advancing public awareness around child abuse and exploitation, and shedding light on the institutional gaps that allow trafficking to thrive.
- Force Meaningful Accountability: Demanding that lawmakers and community leaders look closely at these systemic failures and actively encourage meaningful legislative reform to protect future generations.
A Shared Recognition
While my name, Cagney Gaudiz Richards, is on this beautiful document, this tribute truly belongs to the entire community of advocates, legal partners, and brave survivors who stand with us. It reinforces my lifelong commitment, both personally and professionally, to bringing a holistic approach to both individual healing and systemic justice.
